Cherry Pick of the Week: DNYCE - Daddy's Girl

This week's Pick is exactly what these posts are all about: a tune that gets stuck in your noggin instantly and won't leave.

Daddy's Girl was filmed in the Virgin Islands when this lucky lass was serenaded by her barber with his little girl on the backing track.

'Feel good' music doesn't even come close. I'm just surprised Ellen hasn't booked them yet. Expect huge things from this daddy daughter duo!

What's been playing on repeat in your part of the world this week?

Sin City: A Dame To Kill For - Movie Review

Who's in it?

 and

What's it about?

Following a Pulp Fiction-esque 3-person story line, HUGELY graphic violence and stories are portrayed in perfect Frank Miller artsy style.

Any Good?

As pulpy as month-old orange juice and as grindhouse as a skate store, Sin City 2 is incredibly visceral and FUN AS HELL!

Having only seen a good 60% of the first Sin City and read about 10% of the comics, I really really enjoyed this - as did my good friend Eadaoin who accompanied me. The art style struck me from the beginning and grew on herself, accumulating in a number of subtly beautiful gory death scenes that I found unashamedly beautiful.

The real star of the show

The acting was a bit shaky at the beginning but got much better as the stories progressed; all with the exception of Eva Green. I'm not sure if Ms. Green's script was just bad, but dear lord she was ATROCIOUS. Her acting as the Dame To Kill For was shocking, it was like watching a number of Fair City (The worst BEST soap of all time) scenes being slapped with a giant ham - but don't let that discourage you.

Mickey Rourke was brilliant as Marv - a creatively murderous 'good guy' with a penchant for stealing his victims clothes (and sometimes more); but the real star was Jessica Alba. She goes from trembling stripper to an INCREDIBLY bad ass character as insane as Marv, with scenes showing her slowly cracking and finally the change (you'll know it when you see it, it's fairly scary).

With an Old-Town group of marauding murderous women reminiscent of films like Faster Pussycat, Kill Kill! or I Spit on Your Grave, Sin City cranks the crazy-fun factor to 11. While some shlocky acting from many characters (such as JGL's) seem a little over-the-top, it fits right in with the setting of the movie itself. Some scenes look as if they were filmed for 3D, but I would totally recommend seeing this 80's-era exploitation/grindhouse film in 2D, it's fun, gruesome and utterly beautiful.

Things That Rustle My Jimmies - 21/08/14

Not gonna lie, it's been a fairly rough week and I've been pretty distracted with some bigger picture stuff. Does that mean I'll let the rustling of the jimmies go unchecked - IT DOES IN ITS EYEHOLE!!

In no particular order of rustleage:

The Thursday Chattery - Are People That Record Gigs REALLY Enjoying Themselves? Why Do You Care?

Saw this interesting tweet from interesting chap, Rick O' Shea yesterday and it got me to thinking.

You can click on the tweet to see how the conversation progressed but this sentiment rustles my jimmies in a few ways.

First up, I really can't be doing with self appointed enjoyment sheriffs. If someone has paid as much as you, sometimes more, for a ticket to a gig - why is it your business how they choose to enjoy it?

I get that screens can be distracting at intimate venues but, once your view isn't blocked nor sound interrupted, why is it your business?

Nowadays a lot of people are basically glued to their phone. A lot also associate their phones with their feelings, as though they're one and the same. Seems if they don't record the moment then it never really happened.

I fall in between the two extremes, I'll take a couple of snaps, perhaps an instavid of my favourite song but then the phone goes away for the evening. I do me and everyone can do themselves as far as I'm concerned.

Except iPad picture takers - they can feck right off!!

Where do you stand on the issue? Do people really enjoy the show as much when recording?

Do you care?

Let's Chat!

Sally Hansen Miracle Gel - High Shine Without the UV Light! #OMGel

I make no secret of the fact that I'm not a gel nails fan, nor shellac, nor gellish, nor any other polish that requires buffing my nail bed and frazzling my fingers under a lamp just to set. I am, however, a wanton mare when it comes to a high shine finish. Cue Sally Hansen stepping up with the answer to all of my highfalutin' nail ways with their new Miracle Gel collection. #OMGel is right.

I've shared my grá for gel effect polishes before, Nails Inc and your €19 price tag, I'm looking at you. With this Sally Hansen line we're looking at something different though. How's about an expert tells us exactly what that is:

"Miracle Gel is distinguished by its photoinitiator in the topcoat that forms with the oligomer in the color polish, producing the shine resembling a gel manicure that lasts up to 14 days."

Let me break that down for you and I: two coats of your favourite colour and one swish of the top coat create a gel texture that would not only take the eye out of your head with shine but will also stay in place for up to two weeks. Win, right?

Sally Hansen's Polish Naming Game is STRONG!
Another ha-YOOGE plus with this new line is the removal process. Gone are the days of tin foil witch fingers to remove your gel , this Miracle Gel formulation is removed with your very own common or garden remover. No soaking, no scraping, no buffing, no messing.

You know I'll never see you wrong when it comes to nail polish recommendations and 'run far aways' - remember the Red Carpet Manicure, anyone? I'll need to wear my fingers about the place to report back on actual longevity of wear for Miracle Gel but first impressions are hugely favourable.

Game of Chromes (BEST NAME EVAR) & All Chalked Up
All 18 shades will be hitting Sally Hansen stockists from mid September priced at €9.99 each or €14.99 for the colour/topcoat duo. Take that, extortionate gel polishes!

Are you a gel nails fan? Reckon Sally Hansen have it right with these?
