Dallas Buyers Club - Teenage Movie Review

Who's in it?

 and

What's it about?

Homophobic Texan manly mayyyyn Ron Woodroof finds out he has HIV after an accident with electrical wiring while working. When the hospital refuses to sell him non-FDA approved AIDS medicine that is in trial stage, he becomes a AIDS-Meds mule and recruits transgender Jared Leto to reach into the badly affected gay community to sell this medication.

Any Good?

The thing with this movie is, there's no clear villain (other than BIG SCARY EVIL PHARMA and the Government of course), and it really throws any preconceptions of right or wrong out the window. Woodroof may be a drug mule and is selling memberships to his med club to desperate people seems to be the bad, but he's helping the otherwise helpless massive AIDs stricken community in 80's Texas. Doctor Sevard is giving patients a toxic drug that is killing them quicker than AIDs, but he only seems to want to gather reputable data to find a cure. This film is as morally grey as they come.

Googled 'morally grey', this was the result..

The acting in this movie was some of the most stellar I've seen. Matthew McConaughey has suddenly gone from a joke to one of the best actors in Hollywood in a year and he really shows his chops in this. He could be favourite to win against Leo for the fully believable performance, this is the Oscars after all. Jared Leto was PHENOMINAL as the transgender partner-in-crime, Rayon to Woodroof. Seriously, this is the best portrayal I've seen since Bryan Cranston in Breaking Bad. It was Lead Actor winning stuff, beating all contestants this year by a mile and is sure to win Best Supporting Actor, without a doubt. Jennifer Garner hasn't changed in my eyes since Daredevil, she kept her streak of meh acting all the way through the film, really being the weak link of the cast.

Dallas Buyers Club has me terrified of mopping up at the Oscars and leaving nothing to Leo and Co. but they deserve it. McConaughey could very well win Best Lead and if Leto doesn't win Best Supporting I'll flip every table in a mile radius. I predict this film to dominate on Oscar night and I don't know if I'm against that. It's worth repeated cinema trips to see this just for Leto's Rayon alone, I nearly cried, ehm, fell in love, with Rayon, and I can assure you, you will too.

The Hobbit 2 - Teenage Movie Review

Who's in it?

  and

What's it about?

The Desolation of Smaug is the story of how the party of dwarves and Bilbo escaped the orcs at the end of the first movie and went on a truly EPIC journey to finally confront Smaug the dragon (He's actually a wyvern, just saying..), and also of Gandalf finally meeting and confronting the Necromancer.

Any Good?

This film was EPIC, in every sense of the word. After the first Hobbit, I was afraid Peter Jackson had lost the magic of the original trilogy by sucking all the action out of the franchise, having forgettable and some outright annoying dwarves take too much screen time, and the huge sin of MAKING THE DAMN ORCS CGI!

Just..disappointing really

But fear not, this film fixed all of my above annoyances! I HATED Ori in the first film, (he was the childish dwarf with the slingshot) so I was delighted to see much better characters like Kili and (my favourite) Balin get the screen time. Legolas is back, but totally eclipsed by the completely badass Tauriel, when she isn't killing orcs just when needed she's shooting arrows out of the sky while the 'manly' Legolas looks out over a river brooding. Benedict Cumberbatch does a fairly good job voicing the INCREDIBLE Smaug, even if he didn't have the Brian Blessed in him to do the size of the monster justice. Best of all, and now get ready for this... THEY FIXED THE ORCS! There's a couple now that finally are people again, and one even talks!

Zoidberg says it best!

The acting was great in itself, notably Gandalf letting out Gandalf-y screams as he casts spells bringing me back to playing the Return of the King game, Kili the dwarf being confidant and suave for a 'tall dwarf', and Richard Armitage (Thorin Oakenshield) has thankfully worked on cutting down his use of Christian Bale's Batman voice.

Finally Peter Jackson has returned to the original LotR trilogy form, bringing a movie that could easily rival the Fellowship of the Ring. Great foreshadowing for later to the film and fantastic new characters make this worthy of a watch from an original trilogy fan or a new one, but arachnophobes should be wary; things do get a little Eight Legged Freaks. I'm now unbelievably excited for the final instalment, so much so that I plan on seeing this again in (overpriced) IMAX with a friend this coming week. If you see it tell me what you think in the new, fancy comment section, it really is new and fancy,

Captain Phillips - Movie Review

Who's in it?

 and

What's it about?

Captain Phillips is the (hollywood-ised) true story of a ship captain who's freighter was captured by Somalian pirates off the horn of Africa in 2009.

Any Good?

Captain Phillips opened with some heavy Sony product placement; but then again this is a Sony Pictures film, so it's expected. But then Maersk comes in. From just every email in Phillip's mailbox saying Maersk Shipping to whole 5 second shots of every container on the ship saying MAERSK (yes, there was more than one), the company in thrown in your face to a ridiculous level. I'm going to be honest here and say that (and I'm not sure about any of you out there, but) that level of obnoxious product placement would turn me personally to a competitor in a split second.

Now that unpleasantness is over, Captain Philips was a genuinely good movie with a great story and a surprisingly good cast. Tom Hanks was amazing and on form as always, but the Somalian 'refugees' cast as the pirates really stole the show. While Muse (Abdi) was good as leader of the pirates, it was Faysal Ahmed's crazy second-in-command Najee that really rocked the boat.

Pirate puns on a pirate movie...

While the movie was indeed tightly wound, it was in the third act that the tension really started. I won't spoil it, but the spotlight really is turned on the Somalis from now on, with T.Hanks just looking broody and planning things. Muse seems to take less of the centre stage, while Najee really shows how insane he is. From threatening Phillips to even threatening his own crew, all while his eyes bulge creepily every time a threat is made, Najee really becomes frightening and the type of villain that you just hate and he's fantastic at that.

This is just the start of "The Bulge"

The American Navy and SEALS feature heavily in the fourth act, but much to my surprise they were actually portrayed to act as they would instead of the pandering way the SEALS were shown in the likes of Zero Dark Thirty. While the Americans weren't all gentle and quiet, the also weren't the MURIKA F YEAH that is the standard if the democratic version doesn't work in the film's setting.

In the real events the Somalian pirates were actually just teenagers commanded to sack and sell ships by a Somalian warlord named Giraad, but this fact seemed to be very glossed over with maybe 2 or 3 mentions, and this ultimately led to me feeling no sympathy for the actor's characters.

Rating?

While 'Captain Phillips' is certainly no 'Argo', it really is a great movie. Those who enjoy Hollywood dramatisations of stories like 'Argo', 'Captain Philips' is sure to float your boat. If you can't wait to see 'Captain Philips', or watch it and want to tell me what you think, just leave a comment here or on Twitter/Facebook and I'll answer as soon as I can,

Pain and Gain - Movie Review

  Who's in it?

 and

What's it about?
Pain and Gain is the true story ('true story' being taken with a grain of salt as always) of Daniel Lugo (Mark Wahlberg) and 2 friends - Anthony Mackie (Adrian Doorbal) and Paul Doyle (Dwayne Johnson), a mix of primarily Carl Weekes and Jorge Delgado - as they kidnap Victor Kershaw (Tony Shalhoub) and try to convince him to sign all his assets over to them.

Any Good?

Pain & Gain was an odd one, starting out with Wahlberg's character spouting motivational lines and talking with his friend about how they deserve better in life. Then they meet Paul Doyle (Johnson), an ex-crack addict turned devout Christian who reminded me a bit of Lennie Small from Of Mice and Men at some parts, who himself is down on his luck after being ejected from staying at a church (you'll see why). With this they, 'they' primarily being Wahlberg, hatch a plan to kidnap Wahlberg's current client at Sun Gym and it all goes downhill from there FAST.

Think bigger, smarter and Christian-er

I mustn't have been paying attention at the start, because I was really enjoying the film just taking it as a darkly funny crime film, then a good 3/4 of the way through the film it says STILL A TRUE STORY, and I had one of those Oh Shiiiiiii.. moments. As I said though, take that statement with a grain of salt as most of the time it means "we took this idea and blew it ridiculously out of proportion", but I've read about the true story and it seems to be just as strange.

It's surprisingly well acted, Dwayne Johnson really showing that he can be a great actor when he wants, Rebel Wilson as Robin Peck was on comedic form as always, Tony Shalhoub really overacting his character but making it work) and Anthony Mackie pretty much providing comedic relief in the start of the film. The sad part is that Mark Wahlberg, while having his moments, was sort of ham acting and that really did let him down in some parts.

Don't worry Marky Mark, you're still one of my favourites!!

Honestly I did really like this and enjoyed it completely, even if it did take a while to get into it.I was surprised to find that it was directed by Micheal Bay, and the fact it was actual dialogue with actual words instead of "ummmm..BOOM" every 2 minutes. It was bright and reminded me of Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, which has gotten me completely pumped for GTA:V(sorry, the bandwagon just looks sooooo good..).

I really did like this film, and I definitely recommend it if you're into fitness, true crime or just need to sink a couple hours into a really surprising Micheal Bay film, or, you can read the original article here. Either way, you can tell me what you thought of the film, if you agree or disagree, on Facebook, Twitter, or right here in the comments.

Kick-Ass 2 - Movie Review

Who's in it?

Aaron Taylor-JohnsonChloë Grace MoretzChristopher Mintz-Plasse and Morris Chestnut

What's it about?

Kick-Ass 2 follows Dave Lizewski/Kick-Ass picking up his mask again to join a group of ordinary citizens that have been inspired by Kick-Ass to don masks and form a superhero group called Justice Forever, while the now 15 year old Mindy Macready/Hit Girl decides its time to put down the knives and leather and live the life of a normal high school girl after a promise to her guardian Detective Marcus Williams. It also follows Chris D'Amico/Red Mist as he decides he's sick of everyone passing off the end of the previous film as an accident(no spoilers, don't watch the trailer to avoid them, or if you're in work) and becomes The Motherf%&*^r and forms a super-villain team to finally kill Kick-Ass and get revenge.

Kick-Ass 2 (2013) Poster

Any Good?

I LOVED Kick-Ass 1, it's one of my favourite films, and I love the comic book directing style of movies like Kick-Ass and Scott Pilgrim but this really used it, it's time stamps comic style and all the subtitles in word bubbles, and this was one of the best things about the movie in my opinion.

The film was hilarious in parts, lines were brilliantly written and well delivered, especially on Mintz-Plasse's part as the Mother. Chloe Grace Moretz is absolutely AWESOME, it's basically impossible to hate her, she's a great actor and is only young so she can only get better from here. Morris Chestnut as Detective Williams was one of the best acted parts, he really was like a man trying to control and be a good father to a child superhero that can 'kill a man with his own finger'. Jim Carrey was excellent as Colonel Stars and Stripes, an ex-mafia enforcer turned born-again Christian, while I never really liked him in Ace Ventura (sorry, screaming lines doesn't do it for me) as I find him a much better serious actor (see: Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind), but he was both serious and funny in this and it really worked well for him.

Jim Carrey even kinda resembles the Colonel

Mintz-Plasse's names for his villain counterparts were hilarious, as was the whole scene of him choosing the names. What surprised me was the amount of well-known actors that had secondary parts, such as John Leguizamo as Chris D'Amico's bodyguard, Iain Glen (Ser Jorrah in Game of Thrones) as D'Amico's Uncle, and Donald Faison (Turk in Scrubs) as Dr. Gravity.

All the members of Justice Forever really have their moments, Andy Dick as a gay hero fighting for LGBT's under the name The Fly got a few laughs, and the married duo 'Remembering Tommy' in their Adidas tracksuits and cheap homemade masks really shined for me. Their reason to become heroes was soul destroying (if you read about them in the comic, it's not as bad in the film) and the way they fought being so thrown together that they were my favourite heroes in Justice Forever.

The fantastic costumes of Remembering Tommy

I really enjoyed Kick-Ass 2, but the older reviewers who probably wouldn't like comics or haven't read Kick-Ass (I haven't but I am familiar with Mark Millar's comics) weren't happy, saying it was overly bloody and the language was a bit much but then again, this is a Kick-Ass movie so it would to be expected. I really did love this, even more than Man of Steel that got a 5, but I honestly don't think this is a 5/5 film. I was disappointed to see that Angry Joe was paid to promote this film when it really wasn't needed, this film was AWESOME and it did the name Kick-Ass more than justice, so I definitely recommend this, I still can't decide if 1 or 2 was better.

I definitely recommend this if you're looking for a fun movie to watch or you're if you're into comics, it's funny, crass and really lovable. I love any feedback I get and always try to answer, so if you agree with me, think I'm wrong or just want to say hi send any of said feedback to Facebook, Twitter or in the comments...

Monsters University - Movie Review

Who's in it?

What's it about?

Monsters University is the prequel to (my personal favourite Pixar film) Monsters Inc., and it follows Mike, Sully and a host of new monsters (including a young Randall Boggs) work their way through college, or attempt to anyway.

The winds of change certainly treated Randall well...

Mam had told me that before the film there would be a new short film, as Pixar are known to do, and this time it was The Blue Umbrella. It was a story about a blue umbrella among a sea of grey umbrellas and how he spots a bright red umbrella among the grey. This short film has to be my one of my favourites of all Pixar's short films, it opened with the sound of raindrops on different surfaces that came to form a really sweet song, the best part of the short film for me. It was a really sweet story to go with the song and the animation was absolutely incredible, the littlest things on the screen would suddenly form a face, and it was overall a brilliant opening to the feature film.

This picture doesn't do the animation justice at all

Any Good?

This is tied to Monsters Inc., so it was my immediate reaction to think 'this will be AWESOME' and I was delighted to see I was completely right. Watching this movie it struck me that the jokes in this would go over kids heads, this isn't so much as a children's film in terms of jokes, but more for people who grew up around Monsters Inc., which would include me and also the beautiful Grandmomma Cherry (who accompanied me to this showing) who would have watched it with me as a child. Said jokes weren't in your face adult, but very subtle to the point I wouldn't be surprised if Sully or Mike had turned around and winked down the camera and this really was a pleasure in terms of this film.

Whoosh!!

In terms of general animated films of late, this would be a masterpiece but following the actual masterpiece that was Monsters Inc. it just wasn't on the same playing field. It was without a doubt hilarious, but the story just didn't stand up to it's predecessor. The writing was in itself excellent, on par with the likes of Studio Ghibli anime movies (which I HIGHLY recommend), but very typical in the way of most college films go. As it reached the end the film did take after the original, that is until the climax, which was fantastic and the most original turn in any film (animated generally but also includes most films out today) I have seen in a good while.

Doooood it's about, like, our lives!!

The opening of the film follows Mike as he grows up, and continues to follow him for a short while longer until Sully in introduced as the typical college jock winking at the teachers and doing nothing in class. Now Billy Crystal did a great job voicing Mike as he did before, but for me more Mike Wazowski wasn't necessarily a good thing. John Goodman (another of my favourite actors) was absolutely brilliant, being able to switch the tone of his voice to match the situation or Sully's expression perfectly. For me anyone else would have just held Sully as the jock that everyone loved but the audience was supposed to hate, but Goodman really did shine as the Sully who would be the jock that everyone was supposed to dislike but they just couldn't. While Crystal and Goodman were stars in their own right, for me it was the supporting cast that really stole the show. The students of Oozma Kappa were truly fantastic, every one of them playing their part to a tee and Charlie Day(of It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia fame)'s Art was the best of all. He was reminiscent of  Kimmy Jin (the quiet one with the weird outbursts) in Pitch Perfect, but he talked a good bit more and everything he said was hilarious. And of course, Helen Mirren was excellent as Dean Hardscrabble, but in all fairness this is Helen Mirren so that would go without saying anyway.

I wanna touch it..

Overall this film is truly a fantastic movie in its own right, but falls just short of it's predecessor in terms of story. I definitely recommend it, if you have kids that want to see it, liked the original, or just want a good laugh with a really well written story then this film is perfect for you. I absolutely loved it, and the 3D is good enough to stand out even to me who is pretty much blind at 2 feet, much less in the very back row of a huge cinema. It even had Nan Cherry awake for the entire time, and when a movie can do that you know that it's something special. While I didn't find it as good as the original, I adored it and I can bet anyone who goes to see it will agree with me that it really was excellent in every aspect even if the story does take a little bit to become the style you're used to from the original. The animation blew me away, the opening scene on the bus looked like it was monsters actually CGI'd onto a real bus and it kept a constant standard all through the movie. And even if I didn't like the focus he got at the start, I can't help but love Mike throughout the film, ESPECIALLY baby Mike, he's unbelievably adorable!!

I can't believe it.. I was on a review!!

Now even though I found the story to be weaker than the original, I adored Monsters University and it is worth every penny you would spend going to see it, even if you just stayed for The Blue Umbrella you would get your money's worth. I can't recommend this enough, you just have to go see it for yourself to get what I mean when I say how well it is done, I know I'll be dragging Mama Cherry to see it with me again and maybe once more, as it really is that good.

I loved the original Monsters Inc., and like I said, Monsters University is for those who grew up or were around for the original as it features more adult aimed jokes but still will be loved by children, just look at the AWESOME Adventure Time (which Mother Cherry LOVES) for an example of a children's show that would be great for adults too with their jokes that are geared towards said adults that would be watching too. A well written, hilarious, for all ages film that falls just short of perfect, it may become a classic and I wouldn't argue that at all.
