Help with PMS, How I Cure Mine, Naturally!
PMS, premenstrual syndrome, hormotional times, mid month meltdown, red mist, whatever you call it, I've had it, since a staggeringly young age. I've been actively looking for a cure for PMS for most of my adult life, because, believe me, I suffer. If your time of the month, is preceded by hormonal Chernobyl too, the natural supplement Maca just might help you too... And/or keep you out of prison.

How to Make DIY Peppermint Sugar Lip Scrub!
I've been writing of late about my love for minimal makeup and a stronger lip in the summer months. What's the one bane in the lives of girls that want to rock a stronger lip? Yep, poor lip condition. I've been a lover of Lush's tasty lip scrubs for years but having seen several DIY scrubs on the procrastinator's dream that is Pinterest, I took to my cupboards to see if I could fangle my own. I give you the simplest thing I've ever made, a DIY (& entirely edible) Peppermint Sugar Lip Scrub!
![]() |
| Chances are you have these very four ingredients in your press as we speak! |
![]() |
| DIY Peppermint Lip Scrub ~ Seriously Simple! |
- 3-4 Drops Peppermint Essential Oil (you'll find it in most Health shops)
- 2 tsp Sugar
- 1 tsp Coconut Oil
- 1/4 tsp Honey (more if you prefer a sweeter taste)
It really is that simple. Mush it all together until it's completely blended and select your container. I went for these miniature Kilner jars because Kilner jars. You'll find them in Heatons for €2.69 or online ANYWHERE.
While the above is the basic ingredients, should your container be larger, as mine was, you simply multiply the above to make the desired amount. It took 3 lots to fill this little jar but it will keep once sealed.
![]() |
Not only does it look great for minimal effort but it tastes absolutely delish too. Seriously refreshing in the summer months and a boon for gently scrubbing your lips to perfection in minutes. This little pot is happily sitting atop our microwave and both the lads and myself are giving it a go as we pass. Our lips have never been more kissable!
It was only when I was putting this scrub together that it dawned on me how lovely these scrubs would be as home made gifts. The fact that this one is literally child's play means it would make the ideal, super cheap Thank You Teacher gift that the little 'uns could make themselves for leaving school this month. Don't you think?
What do we think? Would you give this a bash?

New Origins Modern Friction Instant Brightening Pads - They Pack a Powerful Punch
I've been a fan of Origins Modern Friction ever since my thirsty visage tried it first 18 months ago. You can see my glowing review here but when I saw that Origins were releasing all of that natural skin polishing goodness in pad form my interest was piqued.
Who doesn't love to cut their skincare time to smithereens? Or a natural product with enough oomph that it's a viable alternative to chemical peels? When the Modern Friction Instant Brightening Pads dropped on my desk, I was counting the hours until I could put them to the test.
| Paraben, sulfate & phthalate free! |
Made using the tried and true Modern Friction ingredients: fruit acids, rice bran extract, aloe comforting complex (aloe, perilla seed extract & caffeine) with an essential oil blend of lime, grapefruit, lemongrass, spearmint, clary sage, geranium, lavender and thyme. That's a lot of scrubby, comforting goodness to pack into these double sided discs, right? It is and it works.
I think what surprised me most by these Instant Brightening Pads was just how instant the effects were. The pads are double sided and you can feel the scrubbiness as you swipe them across your clean fizzog (avoiding your eyes)(trust me), the tingle starts almost immediately and makes me believe these will not be the friend of any sensitive skinned ladies. At no stage is that tingle uncomfortable though. Wet enough to leave a slight residue, I wait until that has dried before I press on some serum then apply a hydrating moisturiser or unctuous night cream.
I've been having a love affair with brightening products of late, I think it's the spring in the air but these powerful little blighters have taken that to the next level. Strong enough that you only need use them twice a week for one minute at a time yet gentle enough that my skin is comforted and soft when I do, I can see this particular Origins newbie being in my rotation for some time to come.
You'll get Origins Modern Friction Instant Brightening Pads on counter from June, priced at €44 (same price as the original scrub) for 40.
What say we to beauty in speedy pad form? Reckon you'll be picking these up?

Lush Valentines 2014 - Get in the Mooood for Luuuurve
I'll be the first to admit that I can be a little overwhelmed when passing a Lush store, to me it's not about the overpowering scents, it's more about the choice - I see a vast array of loveliness and I panic. That's why I'm probably the only person glad of the apocalyptic weather this week as it meant we had one on one attention at the Lush Valentine 2014 event and boy was it a good 'un.
First up in this year's vegetarian offering is the Love Locket Bath Bomb. The heftiest bomb I've seen in quite a while, the Love Locket can be used 3 times for luxury each go or all in one for a dip with decadence that I recommend on the double. The perfect Valentine's night date escape from overpriced restaurants and wilting roses. Had we smelloscreens you'd order this NOW.
Easily my favourite of the entire launch, Neon Love Soap is knuckle bitingly gorgeous. Blended fresh figs, passion fruit and soya yoghurt means I was never not going to love this. That header up there is the GINORMOUS version in the Grafton St window and I'd happily shower up and flop against it like a fish forever and ever amen.
The Close to You Massage Bar takes it's inspiration from the Jammy Dodger, srsly. Cupachu butter, shea butter and olive oil mean we're talking slip sliding away with this sweetly scented massage bar. Smelling exactly like Rock Star soap & Creamy Candy Bubble Bar, it's a good 'un.
![]() |
| €6.25 - €20.95 |
I'm giving you a straight up warning, one sniff of Tender is the night gave me these feels - that's the intended objective of a sexy time massage bar, is it not? With Shea & murumuru butter, jasmine, ylang ylang (that's the sexiness right there) & vanilla essential oils and absolute, you're gonna plough your way to the counter with this vegan delight.
The Kiss Tinted Lip Balm blends mandarin & almond essential oils to give a light pink but nourishing sparkle to lips. This one will be going directly into my inside póca, very wearable and lip salving too? Sold.
Of course, should you be unable to choose and/or a lad in a panic at lunchtime on Feb 14th, you really can't go wrong with one of the pre packaged Lush gift boxes. Taking inspiration from 80's classic (or as I say, film) (I feel old) Tom Cruise's movie Cocktail the neon packaged boxes are a little bit Gorge.
Toucan Love, a 'one in yer eye' to Putin in the run up to Sochi, contains best selling Tisty Toasty bath bomb with real rose buds & a Close to You Massage Bar. (€13.95)
Neon love (just like the Cocktail logo, geddit?) houses Red Fun, Neon Love Soap, Turkish Delight Shower Smoothie and From Dusk till Dawn Massage Bar. (€23.50)
Lots of Love (in a collectable box) gifts you Neon Love, Sex Bomb Bath Bomb, Prince Charming Shower Gel, Ro's Argan Body Conditioner & Tender is the Night Massage Bar. (€33.95)(Get this one, lads).
All products are available now but limited edition so if you see summat you fancy, LEGGIT.
What do we make of the Valentine's offerings? Are we Lush fans?

Moo Goo Irritable Skin Balm & Soothing MSM Cream for Infantile Eczema - A Guest Review from Karen Mulreid (& wee Seán)
When I saw the ever hilarious Karen from Beating Myself Into a Dress waxing lyrical on Facebook about Moo Goo and its astounding powers of healing for her little chicken, Seán, I knew it would be something that would interest a huge amount of Mommas as Infantile Eczema is one of the most common skin complaints for childer in Ireland today. This here is her full review of Moo Goo Irritable Skin Balm & Soothing MSM Cream. Take it away Karen:
What is it?
MooGoo is an Australian company that makes a range of natural products designed for people with skin and scalp problems. The legend goes that the founder adapted a cream used to keep cows’ udders in good condition for milking, to help a family member with a skin problem. It worked so well that friends and neighbours started asking for samples and thus the MooGoo Company with its original Skin Milk Udder Cream was born. (MooGoo, heh, see what they did there?)
Since then, the company has expanded to other products including shampoos, soaps, face cream and even tanning lotion, all made with safe, natural ingredients. They don’t use fancy marketing gimmicks to get their products noticed, instead relying on good old fashioned word of mouth and personal recommendations to spread the word.
Does it work?
Indeed’n it does. Well, it did for us. When our son, Seán, was four months old, he suddenly broke out in a rash on his tummy, the backs of his knees and at the creases of his arms. It was red, rough and flaky and spread alarmingly fast. We tried everything, all the usual lotions and ointments that you can get on pharmacy and supermarket shelves, but nothing worked. We took him to our GP who diagnosed infantile eczema and recommended another cream to use along with a rigorous hourly creaming schedule. Despite our best efforts, it didn't work, in fact his condition worsened. He was covered head to toe in the rash, itchy and uncomfortable and he had started scratching the backs of his knees until they bled. In desperation I put a call out on Twitter and Facebook for some recommendations and the name that kept popping up was MooGoo.
We got our hands on a tube of the Irritable Skin Balm – designed specifically for eczema - applied it several times a day and held our breaths. It was slow, but it worked. Within days the rash had reduced from fire engine red to a light pink, the roughness slowly softened, the rash slowly decreased. It wasn't overnight, but it was working. We then moved to the MooGoo Soothing MSM Cream which is a little stronger and that cleared it completely. He is now eczema free, he has no rash, at all, anywhere on his little body.
The skin creams we've tried are thick and unctuous so a little goes a long way, but they’re not greasy and are absorbed quickly, leaving the skin feeling really soft and smooth. They smell simply ‘clean’ and fresh, there’s no strong scent. Most of the products are called something cow related and come in really sweet packaging – for example the Soothing MSM Cream comes in a pump dispenser but is packaged in a cardboard box in the shape of an old-fashioned milk carton. It’s oney gorgeous!
![]() |
| Look at this happy little cherub - does he look like he's being plagued by Infantile Eczema? No Siree! |
What does it smell/feel like and will it look purdy on my bathroom shelf?
Where can I get my mitts on it?
MooGoo is stocked in selected shops and pharmacies around Ireland and also ships to Ireland via its online store www.moogoo.ie. For a full list of Irish stockists click here (http://moogoo.ie/stockists/). Prices vary depending on the product but for example a Butter Milk Soap costs €5.95, the Irritable Skin Balm is €15.95 while Seán’s favourite, the Natural Mini Moo Bubbly Wash is €14.95.
Thanks so much Karen, I'm absolutely delighted that you've found a product to give you both that relief. You'll find Karen in a couple of places & I'd advise you to do so immediately - her Twitter, her site and helpfully she has set up a supportive Facebook page/forum for Mommas working from home called Two Cups of Coffee and a Packet of Crisps & you'll find that here.
Are you a Moo Goo fan? Think you might give this one a shot?

HealGel Intensive for Scarring with Before & After Photos
Created by 'a team of leading British plastic and cosmetic surgeons with the help of a renowned dermatological biochemist and a well known actor' HealGel has been in my possesion for about two months now. Having been lauded by pretty much every print media source, I was delighted to include it in my every day routine but even more delighted when it worked actual wonders for my eldest, Aaron.
Packed full of natural ingredients for pain relief, Arnica (renowned for helping bruising & swelling), Silicone to mask scarring, this aqueous gel uses nanotechnology to penetrate the skin and deliver the skin healing properties to where they're needed most.
Truth be told, I hadn't read too much into the background of HealGel before my use, instead I just enjoyed the comforting, hydrating feeling on my cleansed skin. When I delved further though, I knew it could be put to great use. Aaron (17) managed to burn his face with the iron a couple of months back, don't ask me how - don't ask him either as 'I Unno' is pretty much all you'll get.
While I wasn't savvy enough to snap a clearer before picture, we did have a fairly decent one to hand and I'd like you to see just what HealGel has done for him in just 4 weeks:
That 2 inch scar was almost purple and angry for about 2 weeks before we started using HealGel and the second picture was taken yesterday. While the brand recommend you use the gel three times a day, this experiment consisted of me wrestling him once a day, or throwing the bottle in his direction so that he'd use it himself. He didn't hold out much hope but we're both astounded by the results.
His scar no longer itches, is all but disappeared (though can still be seen on close inspection) and his skin tone is returning on the damaged tissue but as of last week, when he saw the difference it was making, Aaron is now applying HealGel voluntarily three times a day - that's huge.
We'll certainly be keeping this on hand for any future accidents (God forbid) but if you have damaged tissue or scarring in need of some TLC, I'd recommend HealGel heartily.
More info and purchasing details here.

Pixy Soothing Body Balm - Luxe & Lovely for Stressed out Skin
Just a quick blog search over there --> will tell you just how highly I rate Pixy Irish natural skincare brand. Well their newest addition, Soothing Body Balm has happily taken the fave product baton from Pixy Glowing Body Butter and taken off at a sprint.
A rich whipped concoction of some of your skins favourite salves, ingredients wise we're looking at shea butter, cocoa butter, apricot oil, coconut oil, glycerine, calendula oil, sweet almond oil, vitamin E, ylang ylang essential oil, lavender essential oil, limonene and linalool.
(As with all essential oils, do seek medical advice
if pregnant or using on childer)
![]() |
| Whipped to rich perfection |
My advice though? Use this to your advantage - having hopped from the shower/bath, pat yourself dry and slather yourself liberally with this luxurious balm - slip into your most comfy cotton pjs and off to the leaba with you. The soothing properties work just like spa moisture socks or gloves but on a much larger scale so you wake up, Benjamin Button style with the bod (skin) of a much younger lady.
I've been using the Soothing Body Balm like this for a week now - two overnight uses - and my skin is brighter, feels nourished and is beautifully scented throughout the day. If you bring out the Moisture Onesie to match this balm, Pixy, I totally want royalties!
You'll find Pixy Soothing Body Balm on their site here and in most great pharmacies throughout the country for just €12.99, That's a pretty daycent price for an all over mask if you ask me...

The Natural Answer to Harsh Exfoliating Foot Wraps with Eco Tools, Cococare & Pixy (NO tootsie pics included)
Before I even start I'll preface this with a promise that I won't be freaking you out with any tootsie pictures, they even make me squirm. That's mainly why I didn't want to try those exfoliating, skin shed inducing foot wraps that has everyone wearing boots in the sunshine to try and hide their effects, I opted instead for a more natural approach with Eco Tools Spa Moisture Socks.
![]() |
| Eco Tools Spa Moisture Socks: $3.32 |
![]() |
| Cococare for Dry Cracked Heels: $2.40 |
![]() |
| Pixy Solid Foot Scrub: €8.95 |
First I hopped in the shower and had a quick scrub with what's left of my second Irish made Pixy Solid Foot Scrub packed full of tea tree, neem oils, cedar wood, almond oil and lavender essential oils in a foot shape of cocoa butter. Second, I slathered on a layer of Cococare on each tootsie and pulled on the Eco Tools socks before I collapsed for the night.
Results?
I barely felt the socks or balm on my feet through the night and awoke slightly confused before remembering I'd even worn them. The results were definitely softer feet. My heels were smoother and one pesky crack that's been pestering me all summer even seemed reduced. Admittedly my feet didn't shed their own skin like some scaldy snake but let's be honest that's a good thing.
I could happily wear my sandals the following day and whats more the results lasted for about a week with no further treatment. I think next time I'll be trying the sockies with a more heavy duty foot cream so all recommendations are heartily encouraged in the comments - with links if you have 'em.
Oh and you know when I promised no Tootsie pics? I totally lied...
Tell me, what do you do to keep your piggies pristine?

The Body Shop Honeymania Range - Luxuriously Rich Bodycare
It would seem honey is the hottest beauty ingredient of both scents and skincare in 2013. From Marc Jacobs to L'Occitane this amber nectar is bolstering ingredient lists the world over but The Body Shop's upcoming Honeymania range contains honey that's just a little bit different.
The indulgent bath and body Body Shop Honeymania range uses Ethiopian Community Fair Trade honey in its products and it uses quite a lot of it too. Just one of the facts that blew my mind hole is that it takes over 100 bees visiting over 50,000 flowers to make enough honey to put into just one product. I was a little sceptical at first but then I tried them. (The products, not the bees)
The scent of the products is sweet but not overly so with a delicate floral kick that makes this one of the most subtle, comforting Body Shop ranges I now use. The honey smells light but authentic, very unlike some of the cheaper, synthetic honey scents on the market.
![]() |
| Honeymania Bubble Bath Melt: €13.95 |
![]() |
| Honeymania Body Butter: €18.95 |
![]() |
| Honeymania Lip Balm: €7.50 |
Also included in the Honeymania range are a honeycomb shaped soapless soap (€3.95), an Eau De Toilette (€13.95), shower gel (€8.95) and a rich exfoliating scrub (18.95).
Having heard the story of just one Ethiopian Mum that has been able to send her children to school based soley on the money she earns producing the Community Fair Trade Honey that The Body Shop use, I'll be picking up the shower gel and the scrub too. Well that and the fact that they smell incredible... but mostly the loving playing a small part thing.
Honeymania launches this month, look out in store and online for further information and make a bee-line for a sniff once you see it.

NEW Matrix Biolage Fiberstrong Collection - More Natural Care for Weak & Fragile Hair
I've been becoming more aware of my hair feeling thinner on top for the past 12 months or so, confounded by the fact that my loving brother, whom I met while out walking and sweating told me I 'look like a chrome dome' (he's a peach) so when The Professional Products Division of L’Oréal got in touch with me to introduce the New Matrix Biolage Advanced Fiberstrong collection I was all ears... and eyes.
Made with botanical ingredients that have been naturally derived, namely the bamboo extract to repair and strengthen the hair follicle and protect from future breakage and combined with the sciencey bit - Intra-Cylane, it's a unique molecule that fills in gaps in the hairs cuticle - nature and science combined in Fiberstrong makes for some pretty great grúaig.
![]() |
| Biolage Advanced Fiberstrong Shampoo (€11.05) |
This paraben free shampoo lathers easily with just a small amount. Pleasantly scented, even without the accompanying conditioner this is a solid, thickening shampoo that leaves now build up on the hair.
![]() |
| Biolage Advanced Fiberstrong Conditioner (€12.20) |
Again paraben free, the Fiberstrong conditioner smells identical to the shampoo and coats the hair easily with a just walnut sized amount. Its thick formultion detangles as it's being applied and reduces the need for dragging a comb through wet hair and means less chance of breakage.
![]() |
| Biolage Advanced Fiberstrong Masque (€12.75) |
The real treat of this collection is the hair mask. I'm using this pot of moisture at the weekends as a treat. Slathering it on, covering it with a shower cap and wrapping my head in a warmed towel for 10 minutes. The towel slides right off and my hair is completely detangled and feels fuller with even the quickest blow dry before styling.
![]() |
| Biolage Advanced Fiberstrong Intra-Cylane™ Fortifying Cream (€16.30) |
Suitable for daily use, the Fortifying Cream is applied to damp hair sparingly before drying. This has replaced my beloved Rich Argan Oil Elixir as my hair treatment of choice. I'm attributing the lasting shine to this step of the four.
Overall would I recommend this range to a friend? Abso-lutely, the price is deceptively bargainous for such high end results and the results are pretty high end - so much so that when I washed and dried my grúaig last Friday before work my boss couldn't stop touching it as she was asking me what I'd used and every one the lovely ladies in the office commented on how healthy my hair looked (Hi, girls *waves* this is the stuff!).
You'll find the new Matrix Biolage Fiberstrong collection in all high end salons and L'Oreal haircare stockists as of this month. We like?

5 Makeup and Skincare Tips to Reduce Red Skin
I've a bit of a treat for you today, beauty lovers, the ever wise Susannah is back with 5 make up and skincare tips to help keep reddened skin under control. Take it away Miss Susannah!
Who wouldn't love glowing skin and rosy
cheeks? The problem is when that glow is more radioactive than radiant, and
that rosy is edging towards ruddy. From a hint of rouge to full-blown, sunburn-chic
red, if you've got red skin you’ll know how frustrating it can be. Here are my
top skincare and makeup tips to fix it!
1. Use a Gentle Cleansing Lotion
It all starts with the cleanser you use
when you wake up in the morning. Red skin is often accompanied by acne and
unfortunately, many of the ‘anti-acne’ cleansers out there are really harsh on
your skin. Irritated skin is red skin, so if your skin feels hot, tingly or
sore after cleansing it’s time to swap your cleanser!
Look for a mild, gentle cleansing milk,
preferably pH balanced to be kind to your skin. Avoid anything that contains
alcohol or has ‘astringent’ written on the bottle!
2. Invest in Natural Products
Even if your cleanser and moisturiser are
‘gentle’, that doesn’t mean they’re chemical free. Red skin is often a mild
allergic reaction to the irritating chemicals found in so many beauty products
today so if you’ve tried everything and your skin’s still red, it’s time to
swap to all-natural products. Look for an all natural skin care for rosacea
range, which is designed to calm and soothe angry red skin.
Naturals extends to more than just your
skincare – there are plenty of all-natural cosmetics brands out there now too,
and if you’re using a natural cleanser only to apply non-natural foundation on
top you’re undoing all that good work!
3. Use an SPF all Year Round
I don’t need to explain the link between
sunburn and red skin. However, even if your skin doesn’t look or feel burnt,
that doesn’t mean the sun hasn’t had something to do with your reddish glow.
Sensitive skin can be aggravated by UV rays, so it needs a protective barrier.
Wear a minimum of SPF15 all year round –
yes, even in winter! – or, if you’re like me and you just won’t remember, look
for one of the many foundations that contain built-in sun protection.
4. Use Green Concealer
When green concealer first became known to
the high-street, I was a little sceptical. Surely caking green stuff on my face
was going to make me look like a zombie, not a normal person? However, green
concealers are actually one of those super secret products that top makeup
artists keep stashed in their cosmetics cases, and for good reason too!
Green is opposite red on the colour wheel,
which means the two kind of cancel each other out. The key is to buy expensive,
and use in moderation. A cheap, green concealer will only make you look, well,
green, so be sure to find a high-quality one. Apply it only to very red
patches, not all over your face, and
use just one or possibly two thin layers. Above all, be sure to wear under your
foundation, not on top of it – green concealer needs concealing itself!
5. Take the time to find your
perfect foundation
There are literally thousands of
foundations to choose from: cheap ones, luxury ones, liquid ones, powder ones,
mineral ones... and, of course, every shade of ‘skin tone’ under the sun! When
it comes to combating red skin, it’s imperative you’re using the right
foundation. This is arguably the cosmetic item most worth splashing out on,
since it’s going to be used on so much of your face.
Remember that foundation is not designed to
cover up (that’s the job of concealer – unless it’s this
foundation) your real skin tone, so it shouldn’t be too light (you’ll look
pasty) or too dark (you’ll look like you’re wearing way too much makeup).
Instead, spend the time – and money! – to find a foundation shade the non-red
skin on your neck and décolletage as perfectly as possible.
Do you have any more tips to cover up red
skin, or specific product recommendations that have worked for you? Please
leave me a comment below...
