Suits you, Sir!

A recent survey by IrishJobs.ie  has found that only one in 10 workers now wear a suit to their place of employment and more than that 55% dress more casually than they did before. Assuming to blend in with the tumble weeds that are blowing up and down offices post Celtic Tiger demise.

It got me wondering though, is this happening in every place of business? How important is dress code in the workplace and more importantly what do you wear to work? (Yup, I’m a nosebag)

Because my day is split between site visits, meetings and office based loitering, my own attire can differ hugely day to day. For the most part I go for a tailored look, trousers and blouses, skirts & blouses, cardis & blouses (are you sensing a theme?) But I do always like to look the part and believe that it does change people’s perception of not only you but your authority in the workplace and more importantly your aptitude for the job.

Super Man was on to this concept long before me, choosing to suit up instead of rocking into the office in his pants. The man was a visionary. There is a perceived culture in every business and I think the 55% represented in the poll above were merely shifting with that perception. There is an importance to fitting in and sending the right social message to colleagues.

There are of course exceptions, take  for example Joe Bloggs in Finance who appears every day as if he’s gotten up from a box on the side of the road to join in the water cooler chats. Joe is not too pushed about perceptions or others’ olfactory abuse. No, Sir. To him every day is Casual Friday, from 6 years ago.

Dress Codes: Universally Important.

Despite my best efforts though, things can go awry. At a meeting recently I showed up in my finest green silk blouse and marl grey suit. During the meeting, however I caught one or two glances toward my cleavage and second guessed my choice. Was it too booby for work wear? I was sure not. Following the meeting and getting freshened up in the loos I spotted the source of attention. Poking out of my green silk was the longest, coarsest BLACK Rottweiler hair that I’ve ever seen (courtesy of Diesel). I DIED. The men at that meeting must have thought, must still think, that I’m sporting a Magnum PI rug on my chesht. Scarlet. For. My. Ma. Having. Me.

So tell me, do you agree with dress codes? (assuming you don’t wear a uniform). What do you wear for the daily grind?

My attire depends too; on how tired I am when I roll out of the bed after having a million 5 more minutes *sigh*
Today i have on green leggings, a black jumper with diamantes and bows on and a pair of black ballerina pumps!

Bah ha ha that's kind of hilarious! I get dressed up for rotations, we have a dress code, understandably! It's nice but I look forward to hometime and comfy clothes!

My job I could be doing many different things during the day .. So to be honest jeans are my BFF in work..

Speaking of scarlet moment a couple of years ago I was wearing a skirt durin summer and I came out of the loo and went about my business (in a very public buidling) for a male colleague to tell me I had my skirt in my nickers

One of my trouser suits, nearly every day. I treat it as a uniform and so easy to get dressed - suit, cotton top that goes - off I go. I cycle so trousers and cotton tops are the business.

Bahahaha, that is hilarious Sue. As is your story Mags.

All my jobs have been uniform based so I didn't have to grapple with the daily decision of what to wear.

I don't have an official uniform as Im not hospital based. but our manager let us get polo shirts with Speech and Language Therapy on them. I wear them when Im seeing adults and I love the ease of wear and not having to think about what to wear. Otherwise I dress smart mostly. live in black trouser, tops and cardigans. But on a Friday Im the most senior in work so I like to wear jeans ( nice ones) and a nice top

Almost spat out my tea reading abut the Rottie hair - I know how you feel, we have one too.

I don't wear full suits often but do wear cardis with shirts & tailored trousers to the office, tend to be a bit more casual if I'm spending the day on site though!

Yup, deffo never a suit unless it's a job interview (and even then it's suit-esque, not a full suit).

I'm middle management, working in an office. I wear formal trousers and a variety of tops - blouses, fancy t-shirty things, tunic tops, cardigans etc. In winter, I try to make myself wear a skirt or dress at least once a week (I find tights uncomfortable and bothersome).

In summer I pretty much live in skirts and dresses as they're easy with bare legs (or 3/4 length versions of my formal trousers).

I wear makeup everyday, and accessories (mainly scarves, belts and earrings). I usually wear mid height heels (after doing yoga and realising how high heels screw up my body).

Loving your blog (especially the Monday thing).

Cheers,
Eleanorjane
